Friar led and sponsored ministries include soup kitchens and food pantries feeding the working poor and homeless. Notably, Assumption Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry in Syracuse, NY serves hundreds of meals ever weekday, to individuals and families alike. The Franciscan Center of Baltimore is the largest food provider to the poor in Central Maryland, preparing and and serving more than 1,900 meals daily. The Franciscan Center is also a from-scratch kitchen, taking produce from Little Portion Farm (another friar ministry) to prepare hot meals for clients.
Working to address food insecurity in large cities is an important ministry for the friars. Together with lay staff and volunteers (including from FrancisCorps), these ministries are caring for those most in need of a healthy meal.
