Home

For those who have lost their homes:

We all need a place which we can call our home. It is that place from which we are from. It is where we feel safe and literally "at home."

St. Anthony was born in Lisbon, but he left his home while he was only a teenager. For the rest of his life, he was rarely in any one place for an extended period of time. This was especially true once he went on the road preaching the word of God. His only home in those days was Christ. Wherever he was, it was there that he was at home.

But his home town was still the place where he was from. On June 23, 1232, a little more than a year after his death, the Pope canonized St. Anthony. But because news travelled slowly in those days, the people of Lisbon did not know what was happening. Yet, on that day, the Church bells rang out on their own and the people felt an inexplicable joy in their hearts. It was only later that St. Anthony's home town realized that the day of bells and joy was the very day on which St. Anthony had been canonized.

Prayer for oneself:

St. Anthony,
Once you left your home,
you found yourself at home in Christ wherever you happened to be.
There are times that I am so homesick.
I long to be at home again.
May I learn to let go
and to stop holding on to what I cannot have.
Teach me to find myself at home wherever I am.
rather than fighting what is going on,
May I see it as an opportunity for something new and hopefully good.
Amen.

Prayer for others:

St. Anthony,
You found yourself at home in Christ wherever you happened to be.
Please help ___________ who seems to be so homesick.
Teach him/her to let go
and to find himself/herself at home wherever he/she is.
rather than fighting what is going on,
May ___________ see this as an opportunity
for something new and hopefully good.
Amen.

Prayer for one who does not believe in God

St. Anthony, you felt such compassion for those who had lost their faith
for you knew that the choice was not between believing and not believing,
it was between believing and despair.
Please intercede for __________ so that he/she might experience
the consolation of faith in God.
May __________ know at the deepest part of his/her being that God exists
and loves him/her.
Amen.
