When
Jesus had finished speaking, he said to him,
“Follow
me” (John 21:19)
|
 |
“Follow
me!” Jesus said to Peter, and today He repeats these same words
to every Christian. Follow me, then, by casting aside anything that
weighs you down, for if you are thus burdened, you will not be able
to keep up with me since I am running in haste. Where did he run?
To the Cross! You too should run after Him, carrying your cross after
Him who so eagerly carried His Cross for you. |
The
way of wisdom is the way of humility: every other way is that
of ignorance and pride. When we follow Christ, who guides us by
His example, we walk a very narrow path, a path of poverty and
obedience. Although obedience and poverty seem to confine and
restrict our freedom, nevertheless poverty makes us rich and obedience
makes us free. Whoever follows Jesus along the straight and narrow
path will not be hampered by attachment to riches and their own
will.

Sermon for the Feast of Saint John, Evangelist
